Day Thirty Six- Another day another dollar

Another early morning. Jill and I woke about 6am and laid on the planks and talked about today and what was to happen. She had lots of questions about the injections, which I tried to answer from my memory of the conversation with the Doctor. These were last minute concern. Chris was still asleep on his inflatable. Finally the toilet call was too great and we had to rise, this woke Chris. I was interested to see Pat’s comment on Chris’s addition last night. I was a bit disappointed when she said that the screen was black for the video of Jill walking. I guess she did not wait long enough for it to load. It might have been better to save it to her hard drive first. We have had some positive feed back that it worked so expect to see more as we see Jill doing other things.Chris had recieved some emails via work and proceeded to do some quotes to keep the dollars flowing in . Sending quotes from the other side of the world should impress.
The morning has been broken up by some major events.
First,Val and Jason left for home around 10 this morning. I think Val was only too pleased to be on the way home. It has been a long 4 weeks.
Next was the visit by Doctor Yang and his entourage. He asked Jill how was she feeling and the asked her to walk across the room, which she did he then he said “out into the passage” This was a bit like a circus. Jill walking unaided down the passage followed by four doctors and a couple of nurses. By this time the walk had also drawn an audience. To our amazement Jill walked unaided to the nurse’s station, turned around and came back to our room, with all the doctors in tow. They praised her and then commenced to look at our picture wall and discuss the pictures. Who was who etc?
The third event this morning was the injections of Diprospan into Jill’s Knees to help with her athritis. Dr Liang arrived and got Jill prepared. I thought he would use some local anesthetic but no such luck. He told Jill there will be a “little pain” but he exaggerated. I felt Jill’s nails, saw the look, and he repeated “Just a little pain” and this was the first injection into the good knee. The second knee (her left) was then injected with the same comment a little pain. I felt it every time he pushed the needle into the bone. Once he had finished he told Jill to relax for a couple of hours before doing any thing.
We relaxed in the room until lunch hour and much to Jill’s complaints Chris got the wheel chair again and we headed along Nanshan Boulevard to wards McDonalds. We again ran the gauntlet of crossing the road, which can be fun even with the aid of the lights. We passed a few street vendors. One selling small fish for aquarium and various turtles, next to them was a cobbler doing on the spot shoe repairs. Then another selling cigarette lighters and the list goes on. We decided to show Jill ,SEG Electronics which is an eye opener in anybodies language. Because we had the wheelchair we were restricted to the ground floor and we looked at MP3 players of all sizes and shapes, mobile phones, showed Jill the pink one but my bargaining skills are very rusty. The same experience when I tried a second time to get Pat’s XD card. Chris and I will have to have a go in the next couple of days.
From there we negotiated the rough footpath and different levels. I’m positive Jill hated every movement of the Wheel Chair. When we got to McDonalds we decided to eat lunch there. I managed the wheel chair and Jill and Chris entered, with the door held open for us by one of the staff. Chris and Jill with the aid of a chart in English & Chinese ordered our meal and we proceeded to the rear and found a seat. It is much larger that it appears from out the front.
Back to run the Nanshan Boulevard gauntlet and home (as we find ourselves calling it ) to 1923.

We had a rest for a couple of hours before heading to Level 4 for Rehab. We started with physical first as the masseuse was busy.Jill did the basic exercises and as  a reward we allowed her a few of her own . She also wanted to walk up the stairs . This is the first time I have seen Jill walk up a set of stairs , even though she had rails to hold on it was an achievment.

Robyn was doing her final rehab as they fly home tomorrow. Dr. Shu was instructing her on a program to follow when they get back to OZ. Wayne was videoing it to make sure nothing was left out.

We  were called into massage and Chris with the aid of our mandarin phrase book and another Chinese patient explained to Dr. Wang about Jill’s injections. I also tried to get him to give me some instructions on massage technique. He obliged but I think I will need lots of lessons.
Next was Jill’s Voice exercises, while she was connected we again got into conversation with Jac (I said Jack before) Discussion was based around a set of animal flash cards that happened to be on the desk. I gave him a small Koala which seemed to intrigue him. We had our photos taken together.
Back to our 1923 and Chris gets seconded to help in the office so tea is put on hold until he arrived back.
By this time we had talked to Jean and Allison on the phone and  Chris had spoken to Nicole. Chris went down to level 1 to order dinner- and It has just arrived.
Must go as the hunger pains are stronger than the desire to write in this diary – see you on the net tomorrow

Walk! Walk!little chinese stem cells. That is so exciting. I did get it to load and have played it over and over I just cannot believe the difference. I have saved it on my computer now.I opened it at school and of course in Pat fashion showed it to all. Many are following your diary Jill their thoughts are with you and others who are not are continually enquiring after the progress.
Rain has cleared and the mud from the traffic is drying up,we will have to get a load of gravel.
The grade 5/6’s have gone to Canberra so duty today will be uneventful.Drama yesterday as one of Jills exstudents got to Holbrook and they had to ring home and Dad-Alan Bell had to go and collect ZenaLee and bring her home as she had gastric–Jenni O’Brien stayed with her and the others went on. Fran arrranged for Jenni to get a ride to canberra when Zena was on her way.
Guess it is emotional seeing your new found friends heading home but you will have a close bond for ever and they are part of the support group which has helped you through this.
Must move on–cut lunches.get breakfast, feed animals and get to school on time for my little treasures which will be eagerly waiting. As you know I am not a one for the daily application of makeup but I had a special occasion and arrived at school with it on and one little girl told her aunty [-who also teaches here.”Mrs Rooks looked beautiful today ,she had makeup on”–how a weather worn 67 yearold can look beautiful?–maybe I should make more effort.
Enough of me,thinking of you all
    Heaps of love

  2. Hi Jill Mac and Chris
Your news on Jill’s improved motor skills is something I hoped for but for it to happen is fantastic . I am so happy for you both and Chris . Keep the diary going , we would all worry about you without it every day .

  3. Jon says:

    Hey Mac and Jill,

You can just ask Sunny or Grace for some air mattresses. They have plenty. This will make the beds as soft as you want.

And the reason the beds are so hard is because the Chinese think that if you sleep on a soft bed, it is bad for your back. However, I can’t sleep at all on a hard bed. Back soon to see you guys.

  4. Jon says:

Also, is that Chinese guy you are in the picture with the guy who had a mild stroke a long time ago and had stem cell treament?
