Week 326 “A Brother or Sister for Riley?”

This last week has seen some changes to Jill’s care. The pressure sores on Jill’s ankle have developed into extremely nasty sores and I kept asking what was going to be done and they decided that dry dressing was the correct method until the wounds nurse decided to check Jill’s blood pressure in the legs using standard blood pressure cuff – result was inconclusive and the decision was to do a ultra sound and that was organised for Tuesday. They decided to x-ray the leg at the same time and Jill was away for about 3 hours. It was  the next morning that I was told that they had an expert on wounds lecturing at the hospital and they would ask her to have a look. She is a Canadian Wounds expert and it was extremely interesting as they used it as a hands on demonstration on how to dress wounds and care for them.  The wounds were cleaned and all the dried skin was removed and they were dressed . They were not to looked at until next Tuesday. She also suggested that Jill’s legs have a special compression bandage put on – only her good leg until the sores show some improvement. Sometimes you can be in the right place at the right time.

On Friday the Orthopaedic Surgeons were doing their rounds again – I was there at 8 am to make sure I knew what was happening. The room was full and everyone had their say at a meeting before seeing Jill after they had seen the new x-rays. The main thing was the sores and the decision was made to take off the cast to protect the sores and Jill was to remain non weight bearing on the leg. They were also to begin mild exercises on the leg.

The thing that worried me was the handling of Jill into the sling – she was obviously in some pain when they did not support the leg while transporting in the sling. That was ok while I was their to either remind them or actually do the support. Another complaint on Monday.

We had two home visits over the weekend which went well – we had visitors on saturday – Pat & Keith supplied lunch and later Aunty Jean and Joan arrived with afternoon tea. Joan is off to London to visit her daughter on Wednesday.

Riley, his Mum & Dad , Aunty Allison & Uncle Chris headed off to Hervey Bay & Fraser Island on Saturday – much to our envy. But before they left we received a surprise email . Riley is expecting a brother or sister. Scans are amazing but with several looking at them we were split 50/50 as to boy or girl. The news was like a new medicine for Jill she could not stop smiling and even the nurses noticed the change. Nicole’s mum Marg also sent Jill a Riley Brag Book with some pictures we had not seen and Jill keeps showing it to who ever comes into the room – It has pride of place on her table over the bed.

Well I had better make tracks to the hospital . Jill has been complaining about her hair and a nurse told us a hairdresser comes in weekly. She is there on Wednesday. We need to book in.

I  am just waiting for the dryer to stop – I put the washing in last night and forgot to put it  into the dryer.

A BOY or GIRL place yours bets

See you soon on the net.
